Profile

Mike has been with Hare Wynn since 1990 when he graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law as one of its most highly decorated students. Mike also attended the University of Alabama as an undergraduate, after which time he spent four years serving the country as an officer in the U.S. Army.

Hailing from Athens, Alabama, Mike is the first member of his family to become a lawyer. Over the course of his career, Mike has become known as one of the state’s leading experts in medical malpractice cases, trying or settling cases with recoveries totaling in the tens of millions of dollars. He has also successfully represented individuals, families, and small businesses in a wide variety of litigation ranging from catastrophic tractor-trailer collisions to commercial disputes.

Married to his high school sweetheart for more than 30 years, Michael and his wife have two beautiful daughters. He enjoys Alabama football and spending time at the lake.

To Mike, the most rewarding aspect about the practice of law is the ability to make a true difference in his clients’ lives. This spirit of helping others is evident in his involvement with a number of community organizations. He has served as a past chair of the board of management for the Downtown Birmingham YMCA, and is a past president of both the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation and the Red Elephant Club of Birmingham. For over a decade, he served on the missions committee at his church, a role which has allowed him to travel to some of the most remote villages in West Africa.

As one of the most highly decorated students in the history of The University of Alabama School of Law, Mike’s accomplishments are legendary. He simultaneously served as a member of the Alabama Law Review, the National Trial Advocacy team, and the John A. Campbell Moot Court Board. He was selected for membership in the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society as well as the Order of Barristers and the Farrah Law Society. He was also a Hugo Black Scholar and earned admission to the Order of the Coif - an honor reserved for those who graduate in the top 10% percent of their class. In his final year of law school, Michael was awarded the Neal C. Newell Scholarship, gaining him introduction to the firm and ultimately, a position at Hare Wynn upon graduation.

As an alumnus, Mike served as president of the law school’s Order of the Coif chapter from 2004-2005 and, in the fall of 2014, completed a two-year term as chair of the Farrah Law Alumni Society, the alumni association for the University of Alabama School of Law.

Notable Work

Mike is known across the state for having great success in medical malpractice cases, trying or settling cases with recoveries totaling in the tens of millions of dollars. He has also served as lead counsel in a complex class action in which he represented hundreds of industrial customers in a breach of contract action - a case which resulted in an $18,000,000 settlement.

When the University of Alabama faced significant penalties from the NCAA in the mid-1990s, the school’s faculty athletics representative turned to the firm for help. After Mike and two Hare Wynn colleagues made presentations before the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee, many of the sanctions were overturned and the university was exonerated — the first successful appeal in NCAA history.
