Two-Vehicle Crash in Birmingham kills Elderly Man

An elderly man lost his life in a two-vehicle crash in Birmingham that took place over the weekend. The fatal incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, May 29. It was reported to the authorities at around 10:45 a.m.

According to the details shared by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the two-vehicle crash in Birmingham happened nearly a mile west of Chelsea. Both vehicles involved in the crash were traveling along the U.S. 280 at the time.

One of the vehicles involved in the incident was identified as a 2006 Scion XB. The other vehicle was a 2015 Volkswagen Passat. It isn’t clear if both vehicles were traveling in the same direction or were headed in opposite directions. ALEA is yet to share details of exactly how the crash occurred.

So far, the agency has only revealed that the Volkswagen hit the Scion XB at a high rate of speed. A single occupant was traveling in the Scion XB at the time. He was identified by the authorities as Donald Mahoney, 83, of Birmingham. Mahoney suffered critical injuries in the collision.

Once the first responders and paramedics arrived on the scene of the crash, attempts were made to revive him. However, these attempts failed and he succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced deceased on the scene of the accident.

It isn’t clear whether the driver of the Volkswagen suffered any notable injuries. Authorities are also yet to reveal whether any passengers were present in the Volkswagen when the incident occurred.

ALEA continues to investigate the incident. The focus of the investigations at this stage is to determine exactly how the accident took place. ALEA has not ruled alcohol and speeding as contributing factors.

In Birmingham crashes like these, the family of a deceased victim can seek compensatory damages from the at-fault driver with the help of a Birmingham car accident lawyer.
