If your family takes part in the Halloween tradition of trick or treating, you know how much fun the evening can be. Costumes, candy, neighbors — it’s one of the most exciting nights of the year! But in order to have a truly spooktacular Halloween, it’s important to celebrate the night safely. Let’s take a look at some tips for a safe and fun Halloween!
Trick-or-Treat Safety
Walking around the neighborhood with your kids certainly is fun, but there are a few things to do that will help you stay safe while ringing doorbells:
- Look both ways before you cross the street. Also, check driveways for cars that are backing out or turning.
- Take a flashlight or something else that helps drivers and other pedestrians see you.
- Take a cell phone.
- Walk with a group if you can, and stay in neighborhoods that you are familiar with.
- Only ring the doorbell at houses where the lights are on.
Driving Safety
Because of the sharp increase in pedestrian traffic on Halloween night, it’s essential that you slow down and keep your eyes open for trick-or-treaters. Turn your headlights on, take extra care going in and out of driveways, and try not to drive at all between the hours of 5:30 and 9:30 if you can help it.
Home Safety
On a night when so many of your neighbors are coming up to your front door and ringing your bell for candy, it’s vital that you make sure your property is safe! If someone gets hurt, you could be held liable for the damages.
Make sure your yard is clean and free of any tripping hazards. Keep your property well-lit and allow an easy path to your front door. Replace burned-out bulbs, repair broken steps or railings, and keep your pets safely tucked away inside the house so that they won’t hurt anyone.
