One Killed, One Injured in Fatal Lauderdale County Crash

A woman lost her life and a man sustained injuries in a fatal Lauderdale County crash earlier this week. The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday, September 29. The deceased was identified by the Alabama State Patrol as Janette Greer McGee, 86, of Florence.

According to the details shared by the troopers, the precise location of the incident was only a mile from Florence. It involved two vehicles. McGee was the driver of one of the vehicles which was identified as a 1998 Ford Contour. 

The other vehicle was a 2007 Pontiac G6. Troopers identified the driver of this second vehicle as Dakota Austin Venturi, 21, of Florence.

The two vehicles collided with each other on the Alabama 157 just as they reached the County Road 24 intersection. It isn’t clear precisely how or why the collision occurred. The incident happened before noon and was reported to the authorities at around 10:45 a.m.

Following the crash, McGee sustained critical injuries. Once the first responders and paramedics reached the site, attempts were made to revive him. These failed and she was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lauderdale County Coroner’s Office.

The other driver also sustained injuries, although his injuries are reported as non-life-threatening.  ASP continues to investigate the incident. The troopers are yet to share other vital details regarding the incident. 

For instance, it isn’t clear how the accident occurred and which of the two drivers was involved in the crash. ASP has also not ruled out speeding and alcohol, the common causes in a large number of crashes, as the contributing factors. Subsequent investigations may reveal the precise cause as well as the negligence involved. If the surviving driver is found negligent, ASP may also bring formal charges against him for causing a fatal crash.
