Hare Wynn - Bike Rodeo 2017

Fourth graders at Avondale Elementary School participated in a unique bicycle rodeo today thanks to a unique local partnership of Hare, Wynn, Newell & Newton, LLP; the Injury Free Coalition, Kohl’s ThinkFirst Alabama, Children’s of Alabama and the United Way of Central Alabama. Students rode bicycles through a specially-designed course to teach key safety principles like correctly identifying and obeying street signage and choosing between safe and unsafe routes to ride upon. Each fourth-grade student at the school was fitted for a bike helmet that he/she was able to keep. After a successful inaugural event last year, Hare Wynn Newell & Newton decided to continue its sponsorship of the program. More than 125 helmets have been distributed to third and fourth grade students at the elementary school over the course of the last year. In 2015, 818 people lost their lives in bicycle/motor vehicle crashes, including nine in Alabama. “Like pedestrian injury estimates, research shows that only a fraction of bicycle crashes causing injury are ever recorded by the police, possibly as low as 10 percent,” said Leon Ashford, Hare Wynn’s Managing Partner. “Our goal is to partner with organizations like Children’s and the Injury Free Coalition to prevent these accidents from occurring and to keep Alabama’s kids safe.”
