Justice Ralph Cook has been a lawyer for nearly 50 years. For 24 years, he served as a trial judge, district court judge, circuit court judge, and as a family court judge. Judge Cook was appointed an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama in 1993, and won a state-wide election for the seat in 1994, serving on Alabama’s Supreme Court until January of 2001. His role as a Supreme Court Justice was to review appeals raised in all areas of the law. Justice Cook was Of Counsel with Hare Wynn from 2001 to 2013, and after a short stint as the city attorney for Birmingham, rejoined the team at Hare Wynn where he continues to practice law, representing individuals and businesses in cases large and small.

The BBA Lifetime Achievement Award Committee was created in 1972 to recognize outstanding and distinguished member(s) of the Bar. Then-President Stancil Starnes established the Committee, which recommends proposed recipient(s) to the BBA Executive Committee for approval. The criteria for evaluating nominees includes service to the bar, service to the community, state and nation and professional achievement as a practicing attorney.
