Single-Vehicle Crash on US-280 Kills Birmingham Man

A man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on US-280 that took place in the Shelby County earlier this week. The fatal incident occurred early on the morning of Monday, June 28. It was reported to the authorities at around 4:30 a.m.

According to the details about the crash on US-280 shared by the authorities, the sole vehicle involved in the accident was identified as a 2003 Toyota Tundra. The truck was traveling along the U.S. 280 at the time. At about two miles from Chelsea, the driver of the truck apparently lost control of the vehicle for some reason.

The Toyota Tundra veered away from the roadway and collided with an embankment at a high rate of speed. The sheer impact of the collision caused the vehicle to suffer serious damage. The driver of the vehicle was its sole occupant at the time of the collision. The driver suffered critical injuries in the wreck.

Once the first-responders and paramedics arrived on the scene of the crash, the driver was transported to the Grandview Medical Center. However, attempts to revive him failed and he succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at the healthcare facility.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) later identified the deceased driver as Christopher Rutledge, 21, of Birmingham.

Initial investigations by ALEA show that Rutledge was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident. Further investigations into the crash continue. The focus of the investigations at this point is to ascertain the actual cause of the crash. ALEA has not yet ruled out impairment or speeding as potential causes.
