Woman Dies in Fatal Crash on Highway 169
A woman from Opelika, Angela Barreto, died in a car crash on Highway 169 this Friday, Nov 15, 2019. The accident took place when the woman driving a car crashed into a tow truck.
According to the authorities, the victim of the fatal crash was driving her vehicle on Alabama Highway 169. Traveling northbound, the driver somehow came into the southbound lane. It was then that the vehicle was hit by a tow truck coming in the lane.
Police and investigators are still unclear as to how Barreto moved from the northbound lane into the southbound lane. For now, investigators believe that weather may have played a role. Barreto was wearing a seatbelt at the time. The tow truck struck her vehicle on the passenger side. The collision took place around 2:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of the highway.
The driver of the tow truck sustained no injuries. Barreto, however, was fatally injured following the collision. She was rushed to the East Alabama Medical Center where she was treated at the emergency room. However, the injuries were too serious and Barreto succumbed to them at around 3:50 p.m.
Investigations are still ongoing and the Alabama State Troopers of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are currently investigating the accident. They are also being assisted by Lee County’s Coroner Office.
Alabama has recently seen many days of adverse weather. Gusty winds, rainy conditions, and occasional storms have made driving conditions hazardous on the state highway. The weather has already been cited as the cause behind a number of accidents across Alabama in the past month or so. With the weather poised to stay the same in the coming days, we may see more of weather-related crashes. For this reason, drivers are advised to take due precautions and keep an eye on weather forecasts when heading out.
