Warning Signs You Need a Brake Change

When it comes to safety, not much on your vehicle protects you as much as well working brakes. These are what stop vehicles when a potential crash is going to happen. Without them, there is an increased risk of collisions on the road. Understanding when to change the brakes and when they’re going bad is important. Here are some of the warning signs that you should look for that would indicate you need to change your brakes.

What You Might Feel

When you go to push down on the brake, it should be a smooth feeling. If you push the pedal down and there is a pulsating feeling or if the pedal vibrates, this could be a sign of an issue with the brakes. You may also feel rattling accompanied by clicking sounds. You may also feel the car pulling to one side after you apply the brakes. If this is the case, it could mean that the brakes are not applying evenly, so they may be more worn than others.

What You Might Hear

One of the major signs that you may notice when the brakes are going bad is a loud grinding sound when you apply the brakes. This means the brake pads are worn and they are no grinding into the rotors. The longer you allow this to last, the more damage it could cause because of the metal to metal contact. Squealing sounds may also be a sign of worn brake pads. If you hear either of these, your brakes need to be changed.

What You May See

If you check your brakes regularly for proper maintenance, you may notice specific things that indicate the need to change your brakes. Checking the rotor, you may notice that there are deep grooves caused by the worn brake pads. You may also that the brake pads are very thin. Typically, if a brake pad is thinner than ¼”, it needs to be replaced.
