Alabama Supreme Court Rejects Scrushy Appeal
The Alabama Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by Richard Scrushy related to a $2.86 billion verdict in a civil case against the former HealthSouth CEO.
“We are, very happy, to say the least, about the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision,” said John Haley, lead counsel for the plaintiffs.
“This is great news and a vindication for the more than 20,000 employees of HealthSouth and for all of their shareholders.
On a broader scale, this ruling is a positive example of the important role our judicial system plays in complicated cases like Tucker v. Scrushy. This has been a nine-year journey in pursuit of justice and we feel like it was time well-spent. This decision by the Alabama Supreme Court means we did it the right way.”
Former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy, who was labeled the “CEO of the fraud” by Circuit Judge Allwin E. Horn, who heard the case in Birmingham without a jury, faces the largest civil penalty in Alabama history.
