Nearly two million Americans live in nursing homes, yet recent studies indicate some 90% of all nursing homes are understaffed, which is often a result of corporate directives to put profits ahead of patient care. Understaffing leads to resident inattention, which can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, medication administration errors, and bedsores. Federal laws, rules and regulations make clear a resident who enters a nursing home without bedsores should not develop bedsores. Unfortunately, thousands of residents are severely injured or die as a result of infections from bedsores, usually caused by a failure to turn and reposition a resident who is otherwise unable to help themselves. Dehydration and malnutrition can result due to the nursing home's failure to take the appropriate time and effort to feed the resident, and otherwise confirm the resident is receiving a balanced diet.
